Arthur Stovell

Annual report design that makes complex information clear.

An annual report brings together a lot of different material: the organisation’s story, its work, financial information and detailed supporting content. I’m Arthur Stovell, a senior freelance graphic designer based near Brighton. I help bring those parts together in a publication that is coherent, legible and consistent with the organisation’s identity.

A structure for both reading and reference

Some readers will follow a report from beginning to end; others will go straight to a particular section. Clear navigation, a consistent hierarchy and well-considered page layouts support both ways of reading.

The design should give the main story room without making detailed information difficult to find. Typography, spacing and the treatment of tables and supporting material all contribute to a report that feels manageable rather than crowded.

Connect the report to the wider identity

A report should feel like it belongs to the organisation, not like a separate design exercise. I can work within an established identity or develop the editorial approach alongside a wider branding project.

For Deforestation Free Finance, annual report and editorial design sit within a visual identity that connects trees with financial growth. A vibrant orange communicates urgency, while neutral tones and direct typography maintain clarity across detailed reports and public-facing communications.

Plan the design around the content

Before starting, we can discuss the report’s purpose, its readers, the content available and how it will be distributed. The design brief may include the cover, section layouts, typographic styles, tables, imagery and final artwork for the agreed formats.

I work independently and with existing teams, bringing over 15 years’ experience across branding, editorial, print and digital design. Early conversations about content, review stages and the publication date help establish a practical way of working together.

You do not need every page of text finished before discussing the project. An outline, an existing report or a sample of the material is a useful starting point for understanding the scope.
