Yves Klein at Blenheim Palace

Book design for one of the most influential artists of his generation.

  • BOOK DESIGN

About the project

Yves Klein at Blenheim Palace brings the artist’s work into the setting of the historic palace. The accompanying publication uses book design and editorial design to bring the exhibition together as a considered sequence of images and text. The aim is to give the artwork and its setting room, rather than let the page design compete with them. Typography, image placement and the pacing between spreads establish a clear structure, creating an art publication that can be read closely or explored through its photographs.

Scope of work

  • Book design
  • Editorial design
  • Typography
  • Image sequencing

Deliverables

The gold cover pairs the artist’s name in blue lettering with a silhouette of Blenheim Palace, bringing the artist and the exhibition setting together before the book is opened. Inside, a restrained typographic system supports the images and written content without taking attention away from the work. Image sequencing and the balance between photographs, text and open space give the publication its rhythm. The cover design and interior layouts work as one editorial approach, keeping the exhibition coherent as a book while allowing individual artworks and views of the palace to remain distinct.
