Arthur Stovell

Editorial and book design, shaped around the content.

A publication needs to do more than look good on a cover. It should help people understand the content, find their way through it and want to keep reading. I’m Arthur Stovell, a senior freelance graphic designer based near Brighton, working on books, exhibition publications, reports and other printed communication.

Give the publication a clear structure

Editorial design starts with the material: what the publication needs to say, who it is for and how it will be read. A sequence of artworks asks for a different pace from a detailed research report. The structure, typography and image treatment should respond to that difference.

I bring layout, hierarchy, image sequencing and typography together as one system. Consistent grids and styles help hold a publication together, while changes in scale and rhythm give different kinds of content the space they need.

Book design that lets the work lead

For Yves Klein at Blenheim Palace, the book design uses an image-led sequence and restrained typography to keep attention on the artist’s work. Cover design and interior layouts belong to the same visual language, without competing with the artworks.

Deforestation Free Finance shows a different side of editorial design. Its reports use a recognisable identity to connect detailed information with a wider environmental message. In both projects, the design takes its direction from the content rather than imposing the same style on every publication.

From the brief to the finished layouts

A brief can cover a complete book, a publication within an existing identity or design support for an editorial team. We can discuss the format, the available text and images, the intended audience and the practical requirements before developing a direction.

Typical design work can include the cover, page grids, typographic styles, image layouts and preparation of final artwork. I have over 15 years’ experience across studio, in-house and freelance practice, and can work independently or alongside your existing team.

If the content is still developing, share what you have and the intended publication date. Agreeing how material will be supplied and reviewed is an important part of planning the design work.
